Guthenberg. He was inducted as a national team star and rank scorer.
But Erik Sorga was only allowed to play for a few minutes at Allsvenskan.
However, it is still loved by supporters of Blue and White.
– Why? Yes, that’s a good question. This is a really good question, says the Estonian.
He became one of the last signings of sporting director Pontus Varnerud before his dismissal IFK Gothenburg. 22-year-old Erik Sorga has certainly had a harder time in the USA, especially after scoring goals for club Flora in 2019. But in the World Cup qualifiers, he scored goals for Estonia in both matches against Belgium.
Is it the perfect complement to star striker Marcus Berg?
But the reality was completely different. Before the match against GIF Sundsvall, Sorga only had to run a four-minute long run against AIK and another nine minutes in the Sweden Cup against Landskrona. Sometimes he was on the bench, but more often than not he was completely out of the match team.
– It was hard when I wasn’t allowed to play, he admits.
Still loved by the blue and white crowd of supporters, Sorga somehow became a viral success, with supporters highlighting him on social media as a potential savior who never had a chance.
Supporters waited too long
Against GIF Sundsvall, he came in with the left quarter, and earned the evening’s loudest cheers, excluding late goals. The crowd sang his name, and he himself responded with a very inspiring effort, even though he was positioned as a midfielder. In the final minutes, he was about to make it 1-0, but instead Marcus Berg had a better shot and hit the second leg with a Simon Terne shot.
Of course I prefer to play as a striker, but I just wanted to give everything to the team. I really enjoyed playing today, it’s very special thanks to the support we get from the fans. It’s amazing to play with them and hear them sing my name. As you can see, I gave the team a real boost when I got in.
But why is he so popular?
– That’s a good question. This is a really good question. The fans really love me and have waited so long for me to be replaced today, they just wanted me to get the chance. Today I took it. Now we’ll see in the next match, but for now I’m going to start over.
The closest thing, however, is a longer summer break for IFK Gothenburg, and Erik Sorga’s Nations League games.
– It’s okay, I play a lot there and I’ll be back in Gothenburg in better shape.
