Oscar Sund talks about the concussion that ended his career

Oscar Sund talks for the first time about the concussion that ended his career.

There is a great deal of anxiety among the former ice hockey player about how he will approach life and the future.

– Is there a danger that I will go crazy?

On November 21, 2020, in the SHL away match against Örebro, Oscar Sund suffered a concussion for the third time in his football career.

The Oskarshamn striker left what became his last game unconscious on a stretcher.

During the first year there was a lot of headache, mental fatigue and sensitivity to sound and light. They were also things for the eyes which is why I got the glasses now. Since then I have had problems with concentration and memory and I also could not speak for a long time because the voice became very weak. I kind of had to put up with the words and yes, there were a lot of weird little things. In any case, things have gotten much better from December onwards, says Oscar Sund.

The most important thing is that he has a headache every day, although the symptoms can vary, he says, “sometimes that flare up somewhat uncontrollably.”

The worry is about what it will be like when he grows up with maybe he can’t remember things and go crazy.

Sambon has cancer

For a year and a half, a lot happened in life when her son Nikolai was born and her partner, Matilda Ambrey, suffered from cancer.

– The past year and a half has been very fast but it has also been very slow. It’s almost like one blacksmith. You remember things but it’s hard to put everything down. It was frustrating on many different levels. Partly because I felt like I did, and partly because I couldn’t always be exactly the support I wanted to give my partner in such a situation, says Oscar Sund.

Now Matilda Embry is feeling better, but there is still a long way to go to get completely healthy and there is also the fear of the disease coming back.

There are still many dark moments, but there can also be moments when I feel so grateful for a little thing. May we have a good morning, that the sun is shining and you may be able to stand up and run a turn. Oscar Sund says I feel so much joy and gratitude for the little things.

During 18 elite seasons, he is best known for his HV71, Linköping and Timrå games.

There were two gold medals in the Swedish championship with HV71 in 2010 and 2017 as well as games at Tre Kronor.
