The rapid dropout of Bayern Munich was observed.
Founded in San Diego, Sophia Jacobson knows the choice was right.
I ended up in a place where I feel very good on and off the field, says the 32-year-old national team striker.
Sophia Jacobson landed in San Diego. Both in a role in the team, in private and between sunset.
“I like watching it, but it’s been a bit cloudy in the evenings for a while, which is often that period,” she says when we get to each other late one summer evening in June.
Sportingly speaking, she hasn’t regretted changing the club for a second, though many outsiders were amazed at her swift farewell to Bayern Munich and European football for a contract with the newly started American side San Diego Waves.
“I feel like I have contributed”
The team leads the league and Sophia Jacobson became comfortable in her role.
– At first, it was more adapted to the team game. I take a lot of responsibility in the defensive game and sometimes it can affect my ability to assist in attack. But now I’m in better positions and more direct towards goal, says Jacobson and continues:
– I received an assist and two goals were wrongly conceded last time. As an attacking player, you want to contribute points. But I still feel good in the game and feel like I contributed. I can post poses and create some. It took time, but in the last four games I feel like I’ve stepped into the better. I can play football now.
She pays tribute to the team’s coach, former British player Casey Stone. Fresh as a coach but the ear is on the bars, according to Jacobson.
– She did a great job with a team and got it all together in a very short time. He is one of the best coaches in my career. To become a new coach, she has most of the things. Sophia says I am so glad I had the chance to train her.
“I ended up in a place where I feel good”
When the news of the club change came, some were surprised.
The 32-year-old did not listen to the loud voices.
At the time when I was in my career, it was important for me to play, to feel the importance of the team. I’ve spent my whole life for this, so it was something I felt I wanted to do for myself. I ended up in a place where I feel good and I feel that I can also develop with such a good coach and good teammates.
If I were younger, I might have given it more time, but while I’m in my career I want to play a lot. I love football and I want to play.
I settled about 15 minutes outside of downtown San Diego.
– I live near the sea and the training facility. I feel like a small town where I live. Quieter and close to the sea. There are nice places to drink coffee. Nice to be able to go into town, it takes 15 minutes, but it feels great.
Life abroad also looks good. There are many Swedes who live here and I have had the time to meet them, and there are many Swedes who have heard from me and feel good.
After Sunday’s league game against Gotham FC in New York, Sofia Jacobson flies to Sweden and joins the national team camp in Bastad.
The European Championships are approaching and the competition has become a fierce offensive with the fitness of Stena Blackstein, Fridolina Rulfo and Lina Hurtig.
– we will see. But I know my qualities have held up internationally before and I’m pretty confident about that and I think I’ve done a couple really good tournaments with each other, I believe in myself and I hope to get there and show as much as I can, says Sophia Jacobson.
