Tim Wedding arrives in Mexico after robbery in Colombia

Tim Wedding, 24, received two guns aimed at his head when he was robbed in Columbia last week.

Now he is finally allowed to leave the country and reunite with his girlfriend.

It was a sick feeling, says the Swedish golf pro.

The past few weeks have been one long nightmare for 24-year-old Tim Wedding from Jönköping.

He initially fell ill and had to withdraw from a competition in the PGA Tour Latinoamérica, a PGA assignment, which he is currently working on.

Then the missed qualification in Colombia was followed up by the fact that he was brutally robbed when he visited a hospital in the capital, Bogota.

Weiding was attacked by three men, two of whom pointed their guns at his head. He escaped unscathed, but his mobile phone, bank cards, watch, a large amount of contacts and – not least – his passport were stolen.

Therefore, he also became stuck in the country.

Frameme in Mexico

When Sportbladet arrived on Sunday evening, a week after the theft, after much deliberation he was able to leave the country and enter Mexico, where his girlfriend Jazmin and her parents were waiting for him in the arrival hall. .

– I feel fine but I’m very tired. I arrived late last night and it took a while to get in, says Wedding.

Getting rid of your passport in a foreign country is never a good idea. Wedding was helped by the Swedish Embassy in Colombia, which issued the so-called “emergency passport”. But it is a really valid passport only to enter your home country. To get to Mexico, where the next golf competition is taking place – the most important of the season – more action needs to be taken.

When Widing landed, he didn’t know if he would let him in. So the relief was immense when he got the go-ahead.

– He was sick. I’ve been traveling for nearly a month and when I finally came out to the exit and saw my girlfriend running towards me…no, it was great to see her again, he says.

You must walk 200 metres.

Widing knows better than to wander with prized possessions in the slums of Bogotá. But when the theft occurred, he was in the hospital for a coronavirus test, which was necessary to travel to Mexico.

– I only walked about 200 meters from one hospital building to another. Then I heard how they (the thieves) ran after me. He says the worst thing is that I had the passport with me, the rest I give up.

He was talking on the phone with his girlfriend when the robbers hit.

– I had time to tell her what happened and she’s smart, so I immediately started blocking all accounts, credit cards, locking the phone, etc. Then I had an iPad in the room so I could call her after a while. I cried and cried, but it was nice to hear a familiar voice right afterward, says Wedding.

need to win

It’s now in place in holiday paradise Tulum, with the season finale kicking off on Thursday. Widing is down to 29th in the standings and would prefer to win the championship so you can finish in the top ten in total and thus have an easier path to reach the ultimate goal – to qualify for the Korn Ferry Tour.

But its loading was lousy to say the least.

– Since I was sick at first and then with all of this, I’ve only had two rounds and a training session in the last two or three weeks. Usually we train every day. It’s not the perfect solution, but you can see it in two ways: I either sit here and feel sorry for myself or I look forward.

– We golfers are good at it. We hit about 70 per round and most of them are usually good, but some are bad and you just have to forget about them right away and look forward.
