Matt Fitzpatrick Van US Open 2022

He has never won the PGA Tour.

Last night, Matt Fitzpatrick, 27, swept the US Open itself – taking a record win of 35 million Swedish kronor.

Then there was an emotional storm in the eighteenth green with the family.

– I lack words, says the Englishman then.

It was just before 1 o’clock, Swedish time, when the third major tournament of the year – the US Open – was decided at the classic country club outside Boston.

It became, as always, a thrilling drama with sharp twists and turns here and there.

But in the end, it all ended in a two-man duel between two young players who had never won the PGA Tour before.

Will Zalatores, 25, and Matt Fitzpatrick, 27.

family in place

England’s Fitzpatrick led by one stroke before the 72nd and final hole total. He had been beating his driver flawlessly all day, but now – to the surprise of many – he picked the wooden three.

Then he misfired on the left and fell straight into the basement.

But Fitzpatrick fired an incomparable shot from the dugout over the green and finally managed to strike the equal double and secure the victory.

“The bunker battle was probably the best battle I’ve ever had in my entire life,” he says afterwards.

Then, it was initially a passionate hug party with caddies Billy Foster, one of the sport’s most experienced players, who has been in for 40 years but never won a major.

Then the whole family – dad Russell, mom Susan, and little brother Alex – came running and joined the hug party.

They mean everything to me, says Fitzpatrick.

He gets 35 million

He and Xalatores may not have won the Majors or the PGA Tour, but they certainly aren’t pigeons.

Zalatoris has now played in a total of nine majors – and was in the top ten in six of them.

Totally insane result.

Fitzpatrick had previously won seven European Tour titles, including twice in the final round of the DP World Championship (and then the race to Dubai) – 2016 and 2020.

In addition, he won the amateur version of the US Open in 2013 – at The Country Club.

Now he had to win the same course again.

“I hope they move all the competitions here,” Fitzpatrick chuckles.

When he won as an amateur in 2013, he received zero crowns.

He now receives 35 million Swedish kronor – the largest prize check ever awarded for a major victory.

– I have no words. This is what you dreamed of as a kid. I worked hard to get here. There has been some chatter that I haven’t won yet in the US, so I can finally do it – and in a major too… No, there’s nothing better, says the new champ.

Matt Fitzpatrick got a hug from dad Russell and in the background mom Susan and little brother Alex.
