Johannes Klapow withdraws from the Norwegian national team

Norway’s Johannes Husflut Klapow is following the Swedish trend of his coaching investment.

Like Maja Dahlqvist, Frida Karlsson and Linn Svahn, he withdrew from the national team for his own squad.

Before the next ski season, Norway will lose perhaps its biggest pre-season ski star. Klæbo has chosen to make her own investment which includes a lot of high altitude training. Something that has previously proven to be a recipe for success for past stars like Bjørn Dæhlie, Marit Bjørgen, Peter Northug and Therese Johaug.

– My father is with me and I will probably bring a friend of mine as a supporter and physiotherapist. I think this would be fine and feel like I have what I need, Kläbo tells VG.

persevere in focus

First, he waits for Park City in the USA, where he will spend four weeks at 2,000m in hard training. Then there will be only a few days of rest before he goes to Livigno, Italy, on October 10, at an altitude of 1,800 metres. But he is not satisfied with that – before the World Cup in Davos, Switzerland, in December, he will go to training on the heights again.

Around January 20 will be the last high-altitude training before the World Cup in Slovenia Blanica, which begins on February 21.

The purpose is to build red blood cells that increase the oxygenation of the blood. This, in turn, will make Kläbo more sustainable – part of a long-term goal ahead of the 2026 Olympic Games in Italy.

“I said yes to that.”

There was a lot of backlash when Maja Dalqvist, Frida Karlsson and Lyn Svan chose to train under their supervision, but Norway’s sprint coach Arild Monsen is taking it all in stride.

As a coach, I would like to have him at all of our gatherings, there’s no doubt about that. Now he’s in a position to want to try this and I said yes to that, and the others on the team said he’s fine.

The 25-year-old will train with the Norway national team for the last time at Bø in Telemark before starting his own venture.
