Times, tire choices and Hamilton’s thoughts on the track

It’s F1 time at Silverstone 2022. It’s about Formula 1 on classic grounds and a race that evokes a lot of thoughts and feelings. This is where Formula 1 began its history in 1950 and this is where the term Manselmania was created. Former World Champion, Nigel Mansell, won the race four times and created hysteria on the track, as he was tough in the races of his rivals and also a gentleman. We remember how three-time world champion Ayrton Senna gave him a chance in 1991. It’s a classic you can see here.

Here too at Silverstone the intense battle between Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton began a year ago.
Remember the situation that led to Hamilton’s eighth win, at the same time Verstappen was in hospital and which in the long run also led to the famous accident at Monza where Verstappen’s wheels were noticed in Hamilton’s helmet?

Great Britain’s Formula 1 Grand Prix – A Home Driver’s Perspective

Two years ago, I had the opportunity to speak with two British Formula 1 drivers about Silverstone and once again posted their thoughts:

Jenson Button, World Brawn GP Champion who also competed with McLaren (AP/TT)

Jenson Button, 2009 World Champion:

“It’s one of the best courses in the world, Becketts is the best curve combination in the entire world of motorsports if you ask me. You simply can’t believe it’s true when you see how fast you drive there. The first Formula One race took place here in 1950, and it’s great It is extremely important to see pictures of drivers like Jim Clark, Jackie Stewart, Ayrton Senna and Nigel Mansell.”

David Coulthard, winner in 1999 and 2000:

“Beckets is my favorite part of the track, there are so many high speed curves one by one out there. You feel the speed, you feel alive and the pulse is going up. It’s great, it’s the best curve in the world.”

Lewis Hamilton can take his ninth win at Silverstone (TT/Reuters)

Lewis Hamilton, eight wins at Silverstone and seven World Cup titles.

“Silverstone is a high speed track with so many great curves that it is difficult to choose one. You have to have good grip when driving at low speeds, but also a very stable car when driving at high speeds. Then you have to find the rhythm, just follow the car from Woodcote , float along and let it take you all the way through the club. When everything works, the feeling is totally unbeatable.”

Damon Hill, 1996 World Champion, 1994 Winner:

“It’s a historic track, just like Spa, Monza and Monaco and it’s a really important motorsport track. I’ve been there since I was a kid, it’s part of my life. It’s a route that has always had a place in my heart, my life, my memory and my career. My parents drove the car to There, I drove and my son did it. What makes it so special is the atmosphere with the fans, but also around the track. It’s fast, with many fast curves and a variety. It’s a fun track to drive fast.”

F1 tire selection at Silverstone 2022

When we discuss Formula 1 tires at Silverstone 2022, it is important to remember that Silverstone, along with Spa and Suzuka, is one of the tracks that places the highest demands on tyres. Therefore, Pirelli nominated the three most difficult alternatives, C1, C2 and C3. Fast, demanding curves like Maggotts and Beckets are a big challenge, but the weather is another interesting factor. The July weekend competition can include everything from bright sunshine and 30-degree heat to ten degrees and torrential rain.

Last year it was an early red flag, and all the drivers left after the crash between Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen drove two stints, starting with the middle class and finishing on hard tyres.

The new rules are designed for drivers to follow each other, just as we saw in Canada, and the tires are designed so that the tires don’t heat up on the surface so they’re stable and running in a wider tire window. We will be testing this weekend, on one of the most challenging tracks of the year, Pirelli Motorsport Director Mario Isola says.

We discuss tires in more detail in this week’s episode of Plattan i Mattan. It will be released here tomorrow, Wednesday.
