Tire selection times and Vettel’s fight for a better world

It’s racing week again and it’s time for the Austrian GP in F1 2022, but first a roster from the UK.

Sebastian Vettel drove Nigel Mansell’s iconic car ahead of Formula 1 at Silverstone.
With climate neutral fuel.
– But with this technology we can keep our history alive, explains the four-time world champion.

Prior to the British Grand Prix, Sebastian Vettel drove Williams from 1992, which Nigel Mansell won at Silverstone that same year. Vettel himself called the car at an auction in 2020 and when he realized there was an opportunity to drive the car on Silverstone, he wanted to make a statement.
He chose to drive the car on CO2 neutral fuel, completely without leaving any CO2 footprint but without making any changes to the engine.

– We left everything as it was, explains Vettel on his website sebastianvettel.de.

Vettel drives CO2 neutral – is it a F1 race route?

E-fuel is produced from electricity, water and carbon dioxide and development has already started in 2009, it is carbon-free and free of fossils. The letter e stands for renewable, i.e. renewable in German. One of the main challenges to solve is that the production of e-fuels still consumes a lot of electricity, and for the product to be fossil-free, renewable electricity is required.

Like offshore wind farms in Denmark, solar in the desert or thermal power in Iceland, says Vettel.
However, e-fuel internal combustion engines are less efficient than classic electric cars, but still an alternative to fossil fuels and F1 is looking for alternatives by 2026 when new engine regulations are introduced.

“This proves that we can evoke emotion with sound and we can do it responsibly and that’s important to me,” says Vettel who works for a climate-smart future.
When the idea was born that we’re driving Nigel’s car, I thought of the best way to do it and I’m very proud that we made it happen.

Now we are turning our focus to the Austrian GP and Red Bull.

Austria GP tire selection in F1 2022

F1 left England for the Austrian Grand Prix and it’s a short 4.3km roller coaster with just nine bends. Last year, there were two consecutive weeks of racing, and for the Austrian Grand Prix in F1 2022, Pirelli chose the same rubber compounds as the second race in 2021.

These are C3, C4 and C5 to try to reduce tire wear and increase the number of overshoots. Last year the winning strategy was two stops (medium, hard, hard), but the tires are now different compared to what they were a year ago.
Since it’s a fast weekend, each driver gets 12 sets of tyres, instead of 13, two hard tyres, four medium and six soft tyres.

After the weekend, Alpine, McLaren, Red Bull and Williams will remain at Red Bull and test the tires before 2023. McLaren and Williams will test for two days, while the other stables will test for one day.

– The asphalt on the Red Bull circuit provides a fairly low grip, which means we choose the softest of the three rubber compounds. We want to focus on the show, on the track that has historically given us exciting races, says Mario Isola, director of motorsports at Pirelli.
He points out that the choice of rubber compounds should be able to provide several different strategies and during Sunday’s race.
