It wasn’t just the last place and the silver medal.
Last year’s Olympic tournament was the first time I saw a blue and yellow national team that was the best offensively ever. We didn’t hold back through the playoff tree but we did get past the passive defenses, loosening the backlines that were so tight that players could smell each other’s breakfast. That the Netherlands scored ten goals against Zambia and eight against China is below par, I would appreciate less than Sweden’s goal celebrations against the US, Australia and Japan.
In tonight’s European Championship premiere against the Netherlands, it’s only natural to start from that attacking team – and add a year of improvement. Hoping that Sweden will rally eleven massively goal-hungry people against a gang that has leaked part in its ongoing generational change.
