Liverpool beat Manchester City after chaos due to VAR technology

The VAR is back in focus twice again.

After several controversial situations, Liverpool beat Manchester City in the Community Shield final with a score of 3-1.

English Premier League champions Manchester Settled in with cup champions Liverpool during Saturday community shield-ultimate. Notably, City’s stellar takeover Erling Haaland intervened right from the start.

However, it was Liverpool who took the lead in the first half, after Trent Alexander-Arnold finished off a header with Nathan Ake’s header.

VAR drama in the second half

In the second half, the focus was on VAR technology. Julián Álvarez pushed the equalizer into goal, but that’s after Phil Foden ended up in a contentious situation with Adrian in the crosshairs of Liverpool. Foden got the ball away after it looked like Adrian had snatched it.

However, the goal was initially disallowed for offside, before the VAR corrected the referee. 1–1 on the scoreboard, but another VAR referee became decisive in the match.

Mohamed Salah played the ball to Darwin Nunez, who headed the ball by Robin Dea. The referee allowed play to continue before the VAR called the referee for the touch line. Liverpool got a penalty and Salah managed it.

3-1 was the end result after Nunez scored the last goal in extra time. In the last minute of the match, Haaland got a dreaming position, but the Norwegian striker hit the crossbar from close range.

As a result, Liverpool were able to win the Community Shield for the first time in 16 years. The Premier League season starts next weekend.
