Ahead of this weekend’s race in France, Swede Lynk & Co Cyan Racing has opted to withdraw from the World Record Car Championship, the WTCR. They believe the stakes are too high and that the championship cannot guarantee the safety of their drivers.

– Stable press spokesman Johann Messner says tire placement is unsustainable.

The tires were already a hot issue before the premiere when the Germany round of the WTCR was canceled due to safety. Changes have since been implemented, but according to the Swedish team, that’s not enough. Regarding the last race in Italy, the team was injured again when world champion Evan Muller crashed after suffering a puncture.

– It happened when he ran a race simulation during testing before qualifying. He was driving over 200 km/h when he punctured the tire. It was fortunate that there was a sandy pier there. Otherwise, it could have ended in a really bad accident, Johann Messner tells Sportbladet.
We have referred this to the WTCR and the FIA (International Motorsports Federation) on several occasions during the season. They’ve taken action, but we don’t think that’s enough. It’s not enough, the tires are clearly not safe enough for us to compete. That is why we withdraw.

Cyan Racing exits WTCR

The Lynk & Co 03 TCR is the heaviest car in this year’s starting line-up, and has been since the new regulations were introduced in 2019, according to the team, causing the car to suffer problems earlier and more often than other models.
This causes our drivers to break tires at high speeds, which can lead to accidents, and then Cyan Racing cannot continue the season safely, says Frederic Wahleen, Team Principal Cyan Racing.
Cyan Racing has competed in the WTCR since 2019 and won the World Drivers and Makes Championships in both 2020 and 2021.

• Is Cyan Racing at WTCR 2023?

– We have to evaluate that and see if there are any changes within the WTCR and if they are enough, or if we have to look for other opportunities for next year, says Johann Messner.
– We should get back to the matter.
Three sub-competitions remain in this year’s season.
