Mondo Duplantis not only took WC gold and set a world record in Eugene.
He also set a new world record for points on the IAAF World Athletics Rankings.
No one came close to his 1,612 points.
Since the introduction of today’s updated ranking system in 2019, no athlete has come close to the “dream limit” of 1,600 points.
But after the WC win and the world record of 6.21, Mundo broadcast that record as well.
– Yes, I can’t see that you can collect more points, says his manager Daniel Weisfeldt.
Does it mean anything financially?
– All track and field players get a bonus if they are at the top in their discipline, but I don’t actually know if it also applies in general.
– But that’s further proof anyway that he’s the best track and field athlete in the world right now.
The shot is the second
Mundo collected nearly maximum ranking points after a twelve-month period when he won Olympic gold and WC gold in both the outdoor and indoor venues.
He also set world records when he won the indoor toilet in Belgrade (6.20) and the toilet in Eugene (6.21).
The world record gives an extra 20 points in the standings which is why he escaped and reached the limit of another dream.
Second in the men’s list is the American shot putter Ryan Crozer with 1,543 points.
That is equivalent to what Norway’s Carsten Warholm achieved, when he temporarily eclipsed Mundo after the impressive world record and Olympic gold in the 400 hurdles last summer.
Just two Swedes
Behind Mondo, only two other Swedes qualify among the top 100 track and field athletes in the world on the men’s side.
It’s Daniel Ståhl at number 29 and Perseus Karlström at number 86.
On the women’s side, Venezuela’s Yulimar Rojas tops the overall list with 1,530 points.
My cheek Sania is the only Swede to lay there. She is ranked 64 with 1,373 points.
