She stated that she would now fall into the rankings, but would have to make her way again and at least escape the yoke of being a reigning champion.
– Of course I am frustrated and sad to leave (the competition), this is probably my favorite tournament.

Naomi Osaka was also eliminated in the first round. The Japanese weren’t very successful against American Danielle Collins, who then advanced 7-6, 6-3. Osaka has four Grand Slam victories under her belt, including two at the US Open. However, the world number one has had a tough time this year, ranking 44th in the world. For his part, Collins reached the final of this year’s Australian Open and is the 19th seed.
