Cups, Inimitable Matches, European Qualifiers, UEFA Champions League. From Munich to Solna – It was so fun to follow Malmo FF during their peak brilliance.
It has never been more exciting than now.
After all the years of continuous growth, it is as if the entire building is shaking from its foundations. The club management giving the keys to the coach who ticks every box in the requirements profile, but fires him after a quarter of an hour and without a ready replacement, so that an unproven sports director has to step off the sidelines, is just that. Naked in the face of criticism. That resources are still superior – and continue to grow with European sales and games – is a consolation for Excel sheets, not for those standing in the stands on Sunday in September 2022.
In a headwind, the kraken oscillates.
Now the questions are no longer about when they will decide on the series, but about how deep the cracks will go, about who will control the work and in what direction. The decisions that are made now will be very important to those in a year, two or three years.
Crisis rock in Boras
There was symbolism in the fact that most of the heroes, in the middle of their first real crisis in a long time, landed in Boras. If Elfsburg Historically it was a club surrounded, for lack of a better word, whining. When I learned about sports journalism at Sjuhärad, one thing that stood out in the club, and that was the fans. Enthusiasts decided to become something different from everyone else and became so under the motto “We don’t hate, we love”. Thirty years later, the terraces have lost nearly all of that advantage, but hearing Stefan Anderson is like drinking a glass of ice water in the desert.
He’s bought Jimmy Thelin, they’ve been through crises together, but the Elfsburg manager said “if he’s not good, I don’t understand football”. And so he ran his club based on this belief.
In the face of the crisis with the MFF, he repeated the same things, and it doesn’t sound like the club leader’s cliché about “trust”. He means it, he has an idea, a belief and a four-year plan, and he’s working on it even if Thelin is currently counting seven, eight and nine games without a win.
When allsvenskan clubs these days move as little as party leaders in front of opinion figures, it is better to hear it.
Elfsborg is clearly in trouble (there is still a Simon Olson-shaped gap in midfield), but now they are facing a not-quite-cohesive team. Lasse Nielsen received a yellow card before coming out of the players lane, the second wave of Niklas Hult escaped on a counterattack against five Sky Blue players and received a penalty after a clumsy interference from Erdal Rakip. 1–0 (Michael Baidu) after a disastrous ten minutes against Malmö. It could have been more. Borås had to play the football they love, alternating between pressing and counterplay, against an MFF who failed to start attacks and had major problems activating Rakip-Christianen’s engines.
The first half hour was full of sequences as the MFF players seemed to be playing on completely different frequencies. Badoo should have scored another goal, Emmanuel Boateng I washed an open position between two people.
The most important and hardest thing in modern football is identity, to have something in which to feel safe and to be recognized.
It was hard to see that in Malmö FF this season it was hard to understand the hatred under Milos Milojevic and hard to understand how out of sync they can look now. After a poor half an hour, they are late against a counterattack team that you don’t want to be late against.
It’s all about survival
While waiting for charter and routing (and my long-awaited linear anchor?) there is still proficiency at the junior level. Mehmet Buya Toray doesn’t have the highest level that Permanshevic can have, but he does things all the time, creating chaos, surfaces, and different kinds of chaos. Niklas Moisander walks around and is generally nice. And look there, Isaac Kiese Thelin can still treat the national team’s old defenders (Sebastian Holmen) like little rackets, taking the ball to his chest and pinning it 1-1.
For Malmo, it’s now all about staying alive, hoping to get a magic trick and praying for everyone else to shoot themselves in the foot.
Absolutely nothing here talks about it that way. Andreas Jorgesson kept the starting line-up for a long time, took a clear advantage and watched Casey Theilin serve 2-1 after winning a high ball and a bit of precision on Christiansen’s pass.
Malmo wasn’t very good, but at least they didn’t make the same kind of defensive mistakes as Elfsburg.
And then they did just that.
Nielsen, Mosander and Biemo all considered Jebbe Oakels playing Baidu for the equalizer, and two minutes later Andre Römer sent the strangest ball of the year while Joseph Cessay easily took it.
Elfsborg is currently a club that stuck to its course, had a season of trash, but eventually won the match again after the success of a well-explored player from the Norwegian second tier. Malmö FF is the club that drove an older team down, kicked a coach and pledged the sporting director’s confidence without getting close to the first fight.
There are different ways to deal with a crisis.
