Refuses to give up on Europe
If Hammarby wins away to IFK Norrköping on Monday, the distance increases to nine points. Malmo, fifth in the standings, could overtake Kalmar FF and EFK Goteborg if both teams win their matches on Monday.
– I’m not quite up to date at the table, but no, the European place isn’t over. We should be able to compete for this position. Nothing else, says sports director and interim coach Andreas Jorgesson.
Malmö FF has not missed a place in the European qualifiers via the Allsvenskan game since 2015, Åge Hareide’s final season in the MFF, when they finished fifth.
Before kick-off in Borås, discovery expert Aleksander Aksin criticized the age structure and thought the MFF basically needed to deal with all or at least nine players over the age of 30.
Simon Bank of Sportbladet wrote in his column after Malmö’s 2-3 loss to Elvesburg:
“Malmö FF is a club that runs an aging team down, kicked a coach and pledged the sporting director’s confidence without being close to the first fight.”
Ages are not a problem
Georgeson:
– It is not the age structure that makes us lose to Elfsborg. The same team performed superbly in two Europa League qualifiers against Sivasspor. They are not old players, they are players with experience and quality, and there are also young players on the team.
– For me, ages are not a problem, but that we have a period when we have margins against us, it’s a little more difficult in Allsvenskan. Then we have to say, OK, now we’re focused on how to change it, Andreas Jorgson tells Sportbladet.
How hard is it to be criticized for what you did as an athletic director and what you do now as a coach?
– But if it goes well, I may get praise from two different perspectives. I have never thought about my life nor lived it based on the number of risks that could affect me negatively.
It’s only natural that I look at what I’ve done as a sports director and as a coach. That’s how a results-focused scientist works, says Andreas Jorgson.
The crowd brought along
After the 2-3 loss, parts of the elite MFF who traveled to the area and sought answers from players and leaders in Malmö FF cried out. Andreas Jorgson and Anders Christiansen stood closest to the heel.
The masses are a large part of the association. Sometimes you have to put things together. Perhaps it would have been good for them to hear from our lips how we feel and think. It was loud and demanding on their part. But I don’t feel directed at me more than anyone else.
– I told you it was time to work harder. In the end they stood behind us and applauded us off the field, says Andreas Jorgesson.
