Since Bartosz Gerzelak’s dismissal in July, Allsvenskan AIK has been looking for a new head coach. Henoch Guitum took charge until yesterday, but the ex-player’s layoff expired and Peter Weinberg took over as the club’s acting coach.

Sportbladet can now reveal that AIK has begun negotiations with former Chelsea midfielder Eddie Newton. The 50-year-old Briton was an assistant coach at Chelsea and his last activity was as a coach at Turkish club Trabzonspor.

He must have visited AIK

AIK confirmed after the summer that the club had held discussions with Portuguese Joao Henriques, who became a coach at Maritimo instead.

Earlier, Sportbladet wrote about AIK’s interest in Henrik Redström, who is also on the list of substitutes as head coach, but negotiations with Newton have intensified in recent days. Newton is said to have also visited AIK.

After that, he also worked as an assistant coach at the club for three tournaments, most recently in 2019/2020 under Frank Lampard.

Newton was also part of Roberto Di Matteo’s coaching staff when Chelsea lifted the Champions League title in 2012.
