Victor Nelson Lindelof and his wife Maja have another important assignment. The duo are going to Gambia with UNICEF during the English Premier League break.

Sweden will instead play international training matches against Mexico in Spain on Wednesday and against Algeria in Malmö on Saturday.

Play breaks in leagues

Few midwives in the Gambia

Maya Nelson Lindelof wrote in a UNICEF blog about how important UNICEF’s work is in helping expectant mothers and children, especially in poor countries.

“We need help before, during and after childbirth. We can help each other so more women get the help they need. It is our duty as special women to help other mothers, women and children.”

The Gambia belongs to the 30 or so countries in the world that have the lowest number of midwives – 0.6 per 1,000 inhabitants.

Victor Nelson Lindelof:

– I am in a position where I can do good things and highlight different topics. My wife feels the same. When we have time, we want to do it. Since I haven’t done a field trip, it’s important for me to travel down there and see where the money is going and how they are working to help, says the Sweden captain.

The Nelson Lindelof couple have two children, Ted Lowe, 3, and Frances, 1.
