It was hard to count all the eyes fixed when Porgy Salming took to the stage at the Tidernas Hockey Gala.
The hockey legend led his family and was awarded an NHL Honorary Award.
– Börje welcomes you because he loves you all, says Mrs. Pia Salming in her acceptance speech.
A salming purée was recently celebrated in Toronto. He entered Toronto’s Scotiabank Arena with his family and received the audience’s love.
During Thursday evening, people in attendance at the Tidernas Hockey Festival also had the opportunity to pay tribute to one of the greatest Swedish players of all time.
Börje Salming was first elected to the Swedish All-Star Team and then received a standing ovation twice. Partly when manager Mark Livengood opened the concert and partly when he went on stage.
Strongly praised
Salming led his family as he accepted an NHL honorary award.
As ALS means Salming can no longer speak, wife Bea gives the acceptance speech.
– First of all, Börje wants to thank you for this award from the NHL. It is a great honor to receive this award. We hope his love and passion for the sport continues to inspire the hockey world, especially youth,” says Pia Salming.
– Börje’s motto has always been: Always Enjoy and Never Give Up. Then we, the whole family, want to thank you for all the warmth and love that the Swedish people and all of Canada have given us during this time, which has been very difficult. Porgy says he loves you all.
Porgy Salming greeted the audience and the Swedish people by forming a heart with his hands.
moment of time
Not one eye was dry at the Thames Hockey Gala when Salming collected his award. Personalities such as Kenta Nilsson, Nils Ekman, Kenny Johnson and Jonas Bergqvist were seen crying on TV pictures as the applause continued.
And speaking of standing ovations. Later during the ceremony, the ovation Salming received at the 1976 Canada Cup in Toronto was called the moment of all time in Swedish hockey.
