On Tuesday, Manchester United confirmed on their website that the club is “exploring strategic options”, meaning owner Glazer’s family is open to bringing in new investors or selling the club outright. The family has owned the club for 17 years and this summer reports began to reach that they were interested in selling.
Sir Jim Ratcliffe, Britain’s richest man, is preparing a bid for Manchester United, according to The Telegraph. The businessman showed interest in the club already last summer, but then his hands were cold by the Glazers’ royal family.
Ratcliffe is said to be a lifelong Manchester United fan, but appears to be concerned about the Glazer’s asking price. According to reports, the family is asking for five billion pounds.
Get competition from David Beckham
Now the Financial Times has written that a consortium including David Beckham may also be interested in the club. Beckham would not be able to buy the club on his own but would be a valuable asset to such a group of investors. With his cult status and ten seasons at the club, the 47-year-old Beckham’s backing is said to weigh heavily on a potential new owner.
