Olof Mellberg is BP’s first choice as new manager if Christer Matthiasson leaves the club, according to Sportbladet.
The parties have been negotiating for some time and Matthiasson has left much to be said for the former national team star’s return to the club.
Christer Mattiasson has been linked for some time with the coaching job at Sirius, where he was one of the candidates to take over the club. He had a meeting with the Uppsala club last week and told BP he wanted to leave for Sirius.
But Sirius has also put Axel Keal on his list of potential candidates to take over as the new head coach, as Brage’s Clapper Sarnpa seems to have fallen too far in the process.

Sportbladet was previously able to learn that former Sweden national team star Olof Mellberg’s name had been discussed at BP, and he is now the prime candidate if Matthiasson departs, according to several independent sources.
The parties held discussions and negotiated for some time and whether Mattiasson becomes ready for Sirius or leaves for another club speaks volumes to introduce Mellberg as BP’s new head coach.
He left Helsingborg IF after relegation in 2020
If negotiations do not reach an impasse, BP also has two other options for a new coach. Olof Mellberg was with Azrudin Valentic and took BP from Division One to Allsvenskan in 2017, but left the club after promotion. He had a short stay at Danish Fremad Amager and left Helsingborgs IF and served as head coach there in 2020, after he left the club Allsvenskan. Mellberg has 117 caps for Sweden and is considered one of the best defenders in Swedish football ever. He has represented clubs such as Juventus, Aston Villa, FC Copenhagen, Villarreal, Racing Santander, AIK and Digerforce.
