Kiruna wants to honor Porgy Salming with a new posthumous statue

Kiruna wants to honor Porgy Salming with a statue.

Politicians in the ice hockey legend’s hometown seem to agree.

– I find it difficult to see that this proposal has not been implemented, Center Party gunnar Silberg tells the NSD.

Since 2015, a statue of Börje Salming has stood outside the Toronto Maple Leafs’ home yard.

Since then, there has been a proposal in Kiruna to rename Matojärvigatan to Börje Salmings gata, the street where it grew up and is located next to Matojärvi’s classic hockey hangar.

It is now being argued that the ice hockey legend should become a statue in the town where he grew up.

Of course he should be honored.

A citizen’s proposal has been received and forwarded to the department, which will produce a proposal for the design and site. We don’t have Queens Street or Kings Street here in Kiruna, but many are named after local greats. I think we should stick to that tradition and call it Porgy Salming Square, says Center Party’s Gunnar Silberg.

– Obviously, he should be honored. We were all happy and proud of what he did after he moved here and he did a lot for our city, says Mats Tavenico, Social Democrats.

Börje Salming passed away at the age of 71 on November 24, 2022 after suffering from ALS.
