Wojciech Szczesny reveals the bet with Lionel Messi

Argentina and Lionel Messi awarded a penalty against Poland.

A very cheap one, says Wojciech Szczesny, the penalty keeper.

– I said “I bet a hundred euros that the referee will not award the penalty,” Chesny told TV2.

It was dramatic right up to the end. In the end, Poland managed to advance from the group stage, despite losing 2-0 to Argentina. The better goal difference was enough for Poland to finish ahead of Mexico.

But Poland has been in a bad place for a long time. In the first half, Argentina were awarded a penalty after Wojciech Szczesny hit Lionel Messi in the face.

“He lost the bet on Messi”

The Polish goalkeeper thinks it was a wrong decision.

– We talked before the penalty kick. I said, “I bet a hundred euros that the referee doesn’t give a penalty.” So I lost the bet against Messi,” Chesney tells Norwegian TV2 and laughs.

– I don’t think it’s legal to do that during the World Cup, so I’ll probably get suspended. But I don’t care now.

“You won’t pay him!”

And Chesney saved Messi’s penalty kick, and the 35-year-old Argentine left the field without goals. But the Polish goalkeeper believes he will not live up to the bet.

– I won’t pay him! I don’t think he cares about a hundred euros, come on, Chesney says with a smile.

Poland meets France in the round of 16. For Argentina, a match against Australia awaits.
