Luis Suarez called “the devil” – he bites

Hot feelings before Uruguay and Ghana

Doha. There were heated feelings at Uruguay’s pre-Ghana press conference.

The Ghanaians have not forgotten what Luis “The Devil” Suarez did at the 2010 World Cup – which made the striker go backwards.

– It wasn’t my fault. It wasn’t me who missed the penalty, says Suarez.

The Ghanaian people have not forgotten their exit from the 2010 World Cup.

At the end of the quarter-final against Uruguay, Luis Suarez came off after saving the ball from entering the goal with his hand. Ghana won a penalty kick that Asamoah Gyan missed, after which the Uruguayan striker was seen celebrating in the tunnel.

Gyan then converted the penalty in the shootout, but it wasn’t enough for Ghana who missed out on becoming the first ever African team in a World Cup semi-final.

“I will not apologize”

Suarez was reminded of this ahead of Friday’s group stage decider. A Ghanaian journalist explains that the attacker is still considered “the devil himself” in Ghana and that many are looking up to him by hanging up his boots.

– I will not apologize for that, Luis Suarez replies.

– I reached with my hand, but it was the Ghanaian player who missed the penalty kick.

“Check hands with Chiellini”

He points out that there are worse things than hands.

– I apologize if I hurt a player and got a red card for it. But I took a red, the referee blew a penalty. Suarez says it wasn’t my fault, I didn’t miss the penalty.

– Twelve years have passed, this is in the past. I played against Chiellini too and we shook hands.

The last sentence clearly refers to the incident at the World Cup four years later when Suarez hit Italian defender Giorgio Chiellini on the shoulder. The meeting between Uruguay and Ghana is played on Friday.
