New York. The Calgary Flames suffered another huge loss to Montreal last night.
And Jacob Markstrom takes it all in.
– I’m disgusted now, the star goalkeeper sighs.
Many saw the Flames as one of the top contenders heading into the season, but that wasn’t the case for the star-studded team from Alberta.
After a 6-2 win over Florida on Tuesday, new hopes were raised that they might have earned a badge — and they were out last night again.
Because it was a 2-1 loss against upstart Montreal.
“My mistake,” said star Swedish goalkeeper Jakob Markström.
The boys did a good job and again I didn’t keep a high enough level in the penalty area. I suck now,” says the 32-year-old host when he met the media afterwards.
– I have to step up, we can’t start every game at a disadvantage.
But that is exactly what happened last night. Immediately after the first equalizer, “Marcan” fell outside the goal to clear a puck that came solo through the home area, but he missed and so debutant Juraj Slavkowski made it 1-0 into the empty net.
– There is not much to say about it, I think everyone saw what happened. The Swede sighs, it simply wasn’t a good tackle.
– Again, I’m miserable at hockey. I have to work harder and stop more pucks.
Elias Lindholm, who scored the consolation goal for Calgary, does not share his compatriot’s view of himself.
– Well, it doesn’t suck. We are the ones who need to find ways to score more goals, he says.
