Argentina wins the unlikely World Cup final against France • Mbappe and the historic Messi

Argentina are world champions for the first time in 36 years.

Today, he capped off an already impressive run as Argentina became world champions for the first time since 1986 after a final drama the likes of which France had not seen before.

36 years after Diego Maradona became a national hero, it took a penalty shootout before Argentina could win 3-2.

When the 35-year-old walked out of Lusail Stadium, he became the player with the most World Cup appearances of all time. In the twenty-sixth game, he also scored in the first half as Argentina took a 2-0 lead.

His goal came from the penalty spot and was sixth in the tournament.

Thanks to his goal, Messi became the first player to score in all of the World Cup’s knockout matches.

But 2-0 is not a safe introduction if your name is Argentina.

In the round of 16 against Australia, the team made a great save from Emiliano Martinez to lose overtime in the final minutes.

Against the Netherlands, two late goals from Wout Weghorst in the quarter-finals led to penalties and today against France it happened again.

After 80 minutes the football ran out nicely and they were 2-0 up in defence.

But then Kylian Mbappe got involved in the proceedings. First, he lowered the penalty kick, the Frenchman’s first shot on goal, and after 95 seconds he shot 2-2 on the line of the penalty area.

But it was not clear there. Messi put Argentina ahead 3-2 in the 110th minute and in the 118th minute, Mbappe stepped up to equalize again after France was penalized for handball.

Mbappe became the tournament’s top scorer with eight goals, closely followed by Messi, with seven.

Then Argentina decided in a penalty shootout after all four penalties were implemented. Gonzalo Montiel rolled past and after that jubilation knew no bounds.
