Liam Öhgren gets help from NHL star Nicklas Bäckström

Father Andreas Ogren is a personal trainer to sports stars.

Liam Öhgren grew up in Juniorkronorna surrounded by NHL players.

– I participated and competed against them as a kid, says the 18-year-old Djurgaard striker.

Andreas Öhgren works closely with some of Sweden’s biggest ice hockey stars.

Among other things, he has a summer camp in Stockholm where they do physical training together.

Liam Öhgren has been involved in tough and grueling workouts since he was young.

– My father has meant an incredible amount to where I come from. In a way, he’s the person who shaped me into the hockey player I became. I did physicals with him every year and his interest in hockey kept me interested. Being a physical trainer has always worked very well, says Liam O’Gren, even though we’re father and son.

private environment

Summer training with specific NHL profiles was developmentally.

– I was there when he coached players like Gabriel Landeskog, Nicklas Bäckström, Jesper Bratt and others since I was a little kid. It was very informative and educational for me to see from the start how hard the training was and what was required. Even though I was many years younger than them, people wanted to join and compete with them. Liam O’Green says: I’ve taken more out of myself than I would have ever been able to manage, and it’s helped me a lot because of the steps I’ve taken.

It was a special environment for him to grow and develop in.

What you also learn and take with you is their humility, even though they are such superstars. Then you take care of how they manage things like diet and sleep, which are important things to be able to function. It was an absolutely amazing experience, says Liam O’Gren.

Celebrating Christmas in the “Bakes”

Among others, Andreas Ogren traveled with the Washington Capitals when they won the Stanley Cup in 2018.

Now in December, he’s with Niklas Backstrom in the US capital to help train for a return to play.

For Liam Öhgren, that meant close contact with these older players and becoming a support early in his career.

I celebrated Christmas at Bucky’s house in Washington. Then I was in a match and I was in the dressing room afterwards. I’m in touch with Jesper Bratt and talk to “Bäckis” on Facetime sometimes. They help with advice on what to think about, they’ve been through a lot themselves. It’s good to have that support, says Liam Ogren.

JVM with best friends

In August, he participated in the postponed JVM from last winter.

– It’s always a dream to represent the country and being able to play JVM is insanely cool. I was there last summer, but the new year is over as the real JVM is up and running. Starring in the winter in Canada in front of a big crowd is powerful, this summer people were on a beach holiday instead, says Liam Öhgren.

Together with Jonathan Lecrimäki, Noah Ostlund, Callie Odelius and Karl Lindbom, he forms the quintet of Crowns Junior.

– It’s really great that we’re five players from the same team, and that means a lot to Djurgården. It feels special and like a dream to experience this with your best friends. We are tough after staying together in the juniors in Djurgården and in the national teams. We went out and became very close to each other, says Liam O’Gren.

He wrote multi-million dollar contracts

A lot has happened to him lately with a regular place in Djurgården in Hockeyallsvenskan, a derby against AIK in Globen, sold-out matches in Hovet, a series mate with double Stanley Cup champions Markus Kruger and matches in JVM with Little Crowns.

This summer, he was also drafted 19th overall in the first round by the Minnesota Wild and then signed a three-year, $4.325 million contract, but was initially loaned out to Djurgården this season.

– You try to take everything clearly, but it’s hard to do it. You always want more and you want to do better for the team all the time. It’s hard to stop and enjoy, says Liam O’Gren, even though it may also be necessary.

In Djurgården he is fourth in the indoor league in points with a home hat-trick against White Hästen on the final day before leaving for North America as the highlight.

Liam Öhgren can best be described as a physically strong skater and goal-scoring forward.
