Historic Toronto player Austin Matthews – Captured the record from Mats Sundin

Mats Sundin sees himself defeated.

In the night meeting with St. Louis, Auston Matthews of Toronto made history – knocking the Swede off the throne.

– It means a lot, – says the 25-year-old.

Toronto was defeated by St. Louis. Lewis in a goal feast which the latter won 6-5 after a penalty shootout.

However, there was reason to celebrate the team’s reforming star Auston Matthews.

With a goal and an assist in the game, he scored his 500th point and 501st in the blue and white jersey – also making it historic. The 25-year-old American is thus the player in club history to score 500 points in the fewest number of matches (445).

After his descent from the throne, he pricked Mats Sundin and Rick Fife, who hit the record 495 matches.

– I certainly think it has a special meaning, with the history of the club and the players who have worn this shirt before us. I’ve been fortunate to play with these skilled players every year and we have a great team around us. It means a lot, Matthews says after the achievement.

Nylander is hot – leading the indoor scoring league

Matthews famously scored his 500th point when, along with third ring Michael Ponting, he played a hot William Nylander hitting a difficult direct shot.

Then Nylander continued to score and saw the Canadiens pick up the difference to tie the game for assists. Now the Swede leads the indoor scoring league with 45 points in 38 games.

In total, Nylander’s streak of eight points during the match was noted.

– Matthews says: When the three of us are driving, competing and playing on the ice, that’s when we’re most dangerous.

There was more Swedish jubilation when Pierre Engvall opened the scoring for Toronto overnight.
