Now the Brazilian Football Confederation is putting its foot down.

“The Brazilian Football Confederation disassociates itself from the use of our shirt in connection with acts of vandalism and anti-democratic actions”They write in a statement.

Brazil has been in chaos since former President Jair Bolsonaro lost elections to Lula da Silva in October.

Protesters have set up camp outside the military headquarters in the capital, Brasília, calling for a military coup to overthrow the newly elected president.

On Sunday, it completely deteriorated when thousands of Bolsonaro supporters stormed Congress, the presidential palace and the Supreme Court.

Many of them were wrapped in the Brazilian flag and wearing the yellow national soccer jersey. The yellow jersey has become a political symbol in the now deeply divided country and is seen by many as a stand-in for Jair Bolsonaro.

The Brazilian Football Confederation believes that should not be the case.

“The Brazilian national team shirt is a symbol of the joy of the people. It is about supporting the team and spreading passion and love for our country. The CBF is a politically independent and democratic organization. We call for the shirt to be used to unite the Brazilian people, not to divide them. The CBF disassociates itself from the use of our shirt in relation to related to anti-democratic acts and vandalism”they sign Twitter.
