Magdalena Ericsson will sit on the bench at Chelsea six months away from the World Cup

Magdalena Ericsson, 29, is recognized in the Sweden national football team.

But she’s on an expired contract and gets little playing time at Chelsea.

– I don’t know why it’s like this, only she knows, says the captain of the Swedish national team, Peter Gerhardsson.

There is no doubt that Magdalena Ericsson was an important cog at Chelsea. The defender was the team captain when the big club celebrated success in both England and Europe.

But lately it seems different.

In the last four games, only one has started. She was against Liverpool in the cup match and then was substituted already in the first half.

Not quite an optimal situation, given that the World Cup in Australia and New Zealand is six months away.

– Now Chelsea is entering a period with many games, so we’ll see. But it would be nice to meet her on Monday and hear what the situation is. I don’t know why it’s that way, says Peter Gerhardson, only she knows.

We want everyone to play

The national team captain continues:

– Sometimes you can solve things when you reach a tournament, i.e. you can play your game. But of course we want the players to play a lot in the clubs, but I can’t influence that.

Can’t you call Emma Hayes (Chelsea’s manager) and ask her to match Magda a little more?

– No haha. Then, perhaps, all the leaders of the national team will call you. Then you can have a discussion about the football-related parts you need to work on. After each meeting, we also communicate with the players’ coaches about how they are doing with us. Then you can get some answers as to why that is the case, says Gerhardson.
