“Two Years of Sad Nights”

Loris Karius, 29, is back after the nightmare years.

Ahead of Sunday’s League Cup final against Manchester United, the Newcastle goalkeeper’s girlfriend wrote a touching message.

She writes: “I want to write this letter to you when you return to the field after these two endless, painful but also amazing years have passed.”

Loris Karius made headlines around the world during the 2018 UEFA Champions League Final – but in the wrong way. The German goalkeeper’s goals proved decisive in Liverpool’s 3-1 loss to Real Madrid and his career has since gone downhill.

Karius ended up first in Besiktas and then in Union Berlin without making any impression. Prior to this season he ended up at Newcastle but far down the pecking order behind Nick Pope and Martin Dubravka.

He went for two years

The German has not played a competitive match for two years but is now back on the big stage. With Pope suspended and Dubravka absent, Karius appears set to guard Newcastle’s goal in the League Cup final against Manchester United tonight.

There’s no doubt it’s been a tough few years, as Karius’ girlfriend Delita Lotta confirms in an emotional message posted to The Athletic’s website.

“Dear Loris. I want to write this letter when you return to the field after these endless, painful but also amazing two years have passed,” the letter begins.

“Very proud”

She goes on to describe the years Karius spent in the fridge.

“The days you spent believing in your dream, loving it, and holding on so tightly only to have it brutally snatched from you. Two years of sad nights, the knot in your neck and the bad thoughts that kept you from playing,” she writes and continues:

“We don’t deny it, it was hard. But as you taught me, ten percent of life is about what happens to you and 90 percent about how you choose to act. You’ve decided to make your own future by embracing change and working harder to get back. I’m so proud of you.” .”

Manchester United – Newcastle starts at 17.30 and broadcasts on Viaplay
