With two goals in San Jose’s away game against Winnipeg, Erik Carlson broke the 100-point barrier as the first NHL defenseman in over 30 years.
– It’s something very special, says the star from Småland.
It was clear early on that it was during San Jose’s visit to Winnipeg that Erik Carlsson could potentially reach a milestone that no other Swede or European in NHL history has come close to.
The match at the Canada Life Center lasted just 20 seconds before the 32-year-old from Landsbro whipped his 24th shutout of the season, breaking Oliver Ekman-Larsson’s Swede’s goal-scoring record as well.
Then it was held until the start of the third period, but then, in a power play, it struck again – and the hundredth point of the season was a reality.
– There was a lot of talk about it at the end, so it’s nice to get it done, King Carl says when he meets the media afterwards.
– It’s very special to score a hundred points, of course I’m happy.
It is really special. The last NHL defenseman to produce triple digits was Brian Leetch, in the 1991-1992 season, and only six in the NHL’s nearly 100-year history have managed to do so.
Bobby Orr, Paul Covey, Dennis Potvin, Al McInnes, Leach – and Carlson.
So it’s understandable that Sharks captain Logan Couture made sure “Ek65,” another rookie who just scored the first goal, kept the puck — and that daughter Harlow chatted with “Congratulations Dad” banners on wife Melinda’s social media.
– I’m in good shape mentally and physically and I’ve been able to play all the matches this year. This is me, as all NHL players are proud of, notes Eric.
The Sharks lost the game 6-2 and there would be no team playoffs – something that was obvious for a long time.
The question is: Will the first defender in the NHL 100 club in 31 years return and play in the WC with Tre Kronor?
