Sacco Koivu and his wife, Hana, drew up a prenuptial agreement

Miko Koivu, 40, has been divorced for three years.

And now Finn’s older brother Sacco is acting to avoid the same bitter outcome.

– It’s an agreement created and updated, the former NHL star tells Ilta-Sanomat.

Former NHL player Mikko Koivu, while still an active player with the Minnesota Wild, filed for divorce from his wife, Helena, in 2020.

For three years now, the couple have been fighting to complete it.

The dispute was that a Finnish court would not allow them to divorce because the couple did not live in Finland, Mikko claimed. Instead, they sided with the wife, who wanted the American legal system to finalize the couple’s divorce. The whole thing was rooted in a property division dispute, and Helena would get a bigger financial stake — Koivu earned close to SEK 800 million during his years in the NHL — if the decision was made in a US court.

21 years later

Now the dispute has prompted Miku’s older brother Saku to move.

The 48-year-old, who played a total of 1,124 games for the Montreal Canadiens and Anaheim Ducks during his NHL career, married Hannah in 2002.

Only now, 21 years later, have the couple signed and registered a prenuptial agreement in Finland, something Ilta-Sanomat believes did not exist before.

However, the Finnish hockey icon believes the newly drawn up prenuptial agreement has nothing to do with his brother’s feud.

– We have been abroad and have been modernized here (in Finland) in this way. It is an agreement that has been established and updated and there is nothing else to comment on, he tells the newspaper.

13 seasons in Montreal

According to information received by the authorities, Turku is registered as the residence of Sacco and Hana.

The prenuptial agreement reveals that the couple had reached a very detailed agreement to secure each other’s assets. According to the agreement, it is also the courts in Finland that deal with a possible divorce.

Sako Koivu, who spent a total of 13 seasons in the Montreal Canadiens, earned around 480 million crowns during his career.
