But the club are doing absolutely the right thing in pumping millions into signing 23-year-old Vastgöten.
He’s already one of the best defensemen in the NHL — and he’s only going to get better.
The day before the 2023-2024 Premier League results came, the news Western New York hockey fans had been waiting for since last spring came.
Rasmus Dahlen has signed a new contract with the Sabers and will remain with the club for at least eight years. For this problem, he receives a total of approximately one billion kroner – that is, eleven million dollars, on average, per season.
Not only is it one of the best salaries in the entire NHL, as far as defensemen are concerned, it’s also punished by fellow player Erik Karlsson’s compensation in Pittsburgh: It’s also the highest amount Buffalo has ever paid for a player – then the likes of Dominik Hasek, Phil Housley, Pat LaFontaine, and Alexander Mogilny, Daniel Briere, Chris Drury, and Jack Eichel review In the Gray City on the Northeast Bend of Lake Erie.

I have slowly improved
Yes, of course it’s possible to think that it’s completely inappropriate for athletes to earn an obscene amount of money, especially at such a young age, but given the way the market works in the NHL, Rasmus should have all those millions.
The only Swedish second-round pick, after Mats Sundin, he has slowly gotten better and better every year since making his debut in the fall of 2018 and last season established himself once and for all as a superstar. Buffalo was just one point away from breaking their twelve-year playoff drought and that had a lot to do with Rasmus. His sense of play, the way he drives the game, his brilliant passing and natural poise – he can only develop in his 30s, but somehow, Rasmus already has the incredible aura of a scarred veteran.
Many – myself included – believe that Rasmus, with the willing help of great teammates like Taj Thompson, Alex Tuch and Owen Bauer, will lead this year’s team past the final hurdle and then make the Sabers a playoff contender for years to come.
In fact, this can lead to the strange result that the salaries we see today are modest.
The NHL salary cap, given there are no new global catastrophes to destroy all of our bones, will rise significantly in the next few years — while Rasmus is almost guaranteed to only get better.
So yes – at the turn of the next decade, it’s not impossible that eleven million dollars per season could be the net selling price for a star like Dahlen from Vastergotland,
But for now we can say congratulations.
