Italian footballer Giovanni Padovani, 27, is accused of murder.
He is said to have beaten his ex-girlfriend to death with a hammer.
Several international media wrote that Giovanni Padovani is in custody, on suspicion of murdering his 56-year-old ex-girlfriend.
According to The Sun, citing Italian Corriere della Sera, he assaulted the woman with a hammer and baseball bat in her apartment on Tuesday.
At that time, the woman was on the phone with her sister who heard her screaming.
– She got out of her car and started screaming: “No Giovanni, I beg you, help,” she told a local TV station.
Died in hospital
The sister alerted the police who arrived quickly. She was still conscious but died in hospital as a result of serious head injuries.
– Kill her, sister continues.
Padovani is said to have harassed and stalked his ex-girlfriend after the break-up, something that should have been reported at the beginning of August.
– She was so afraid of him because he became so stubborn. A neighbor told local media that she did not want to let him into the house.
The Sun writes that the case has sparked outrage in Italy, where many believe the country’s legal system is not doing enough to protect women in such cases.

Padovani previously played for Napoli as a junior and represented a total of ten clubs in Serie A and Serie A.
Padovani signed for Serie A club Sancataldese earlier this month. Lawyer Salvatore Pirello, a coach at the club, says Padovani was already suspended at the time of the killing because he left the team abruptly last weekend.
– Since he left us without explanation before the Sunday game, we asked him to look for a new club. Nobody could expect anything like that. We are shocked by the news, he told Corriere della Sera.
