Streaming giant Amazon Prime has for the first time acquired the British rights to broadcast the UEFA Champions League.

The agreement starts in 2024 and costs more than 6 billion Swedish kronor per season and provides one match per week.

Amazon acquired the rights to the Champions League from the 2024-2025 season until 2026-2027. The agreement was shared with current rights holder BT Sports but allows the streaming service to choose any Tuesday matches you want, roughly 20 games per season.

The English team will be Amazon’s top priority until the semi-finals, provided the English team gets there. The remaining matches as well as the Europa League and Conference League will be awarded to BT Sports.

The deal is worth more than SEK 6 billion per season.

Adding the Champions League is huge for us, Alex Green, CEO of Amazon Prime Video Sport Europe, said.

From the 2024-2025 season, the Champions League will be included in a new format, increasing the number of matches from 125 to 189.

At the moment, UEFA receives about 37 billion Swedish kronor for broadcasting rights from its tournaments over a three-year period. It is expected to rise to 51 billion by 2027, an increase of 20 percent.
