Max Verstappen had major problems with the DRS. He had no mate.
Now Red Bull is revealing the cause of the error.
Lose weight, says Helmut Marko.
The Red Bull motorsports consultant notes that Max Verstappen got new parts for his RB 18 before the race in Barcelona, but they also posed reliability issues. This was the reason why he could sometimes use the DRS and sometimes not, which caused great frustration with Verstappen.
“At the pace we’re developing now, we can’t do everything for both cars,” Marko says according to the Motorsport Total website.
– We walk here on a thin line, ten kilograms give about three and a half tenths per lap here and we can not predict what will go wrong. We thought we had fixed the problem after qualifying, but we have to learn more today.
Marko explains that it is precisely the heft that underlies Verstappen’s DRS problem and that Perez did not have the same parts and therefore not the same problem.
When you realize that you weigh a lot, you need to start reducing the weight of the parts. Here we go beyond the limits and then the parts bend or do not have the required rigidity.
Max Verstappen Leather VM
Max Verstappen was crazy during the race and reacted hard over the radio when he repeatedly tried to activate his DRS, but it didn’t work.
– Christian Horner said there might have been a little tantrum, but that’s perfectly understandable when he tries to press the button 50 times at once.
The solution this time was not to press the DRS button when driving over the pavement but afterwards.
– We told him to stay calm and pressure only once. He pressed the button over and over and then closed the wing again. Fortunately, he pressed once at the right time and then it worked, says Marco.
According to the motorsports consultant, the problem must be resolved for Monaco, even if the DRS in particular is not something to decide on the city’s narrow line next to the Mediterranean.
We understand the problem and know the cause. They’re five days there and every day has 24 hours, so that shouldn’t be a problem, he said.
– We had weight problems already last season. So we know about her and in Monte Carlos, two kilograms more or less do not play a decisive role.
