At least 32 children killed in tragedy in Indonesia

At least 32 children were killed in connection with Saturday’s disaster in Indonesia.

A total of 125 people were suffocated or trampled to death in the chaos that followed.

– From the latest data we received, we can see that 32 of the 125 people who died in the accident were children, with the youngest being between three and four years old, an official told AFP.

Panic erupted after the football match between Arima and Persepaya Surabaya at Kanjuruhan Stadium in Malang.

Disgruntled home fans stormed the stadium and police responded with tear gas.

Of the 125 reported deaths, 32 are now said to be minors, with the youngest aged between three and four years.

The Indonesian Football Association wrote on its website that Arima lost 3-2 and disgruntled fans took to the field after the final whistle.

It was the first time in 23 years that Arima had played at home against rival Persibaya Surabhai in the First Division.

Died in hospital

“34 people died inside the stadium and the rest died in hospital,” Police Chief Nico Aventa said in a statement after the incident.

The stadium seats 42,000 and is said to be completely sold out.

According to the police, approximately 3,000 people stormed the plane.

When police tried to disperse supporters in the field with tear gas, all exits were said to have become overcrowded and blocked.

According to witness accounts, many women, elderly people, and young children appeared to be trapped without being strong enough to follow the stream.
