Earlier this week, Chicago parted ways with Corey Perry.
Now the NHL veteran will seek help to kick his addiction.
– I feel ashamed and have let you all down, he says in a statement.
After an internal investigation, the Chicago Blackhawks have terminated Corey Perry’s contract with immediate effect.
The reason is that the 38-year-old had “unacceptable behaviour” in relation to an away match in Columbus.
“It is partly in violation of what is written in his contract and partly against the Blackhawks’ internal policy regarding a professional and safe work environment,” the club wrote in a press release.
Speaking for the first time
Perry, who earns about 40 million Swedish krona, has not commented at all. So far.
“I want to sincerely apologize to the entire Chicago Blackhawks organization, including the owners, management, coaches, coaching staff, staff and teammates. I also want to apologize to my fans and family. I am ashamed and have let you all down,” he said in a statement.
There is a rumor circulating around Perry that he had sex with a member of his teammate’s family. The club has already denied the rumor, calling it “disgusting”.
Alcoholic
The 38-year-old is on the same line.
He added: “I am disgusted by the impact this has had on others and I want to make it clear that this in no way includes any of my teammates or their family members.”
Instead, it appears to be related to alcohol abuse.
“I have begun working with mental health and substance abuse experts to discuss my issues with alcohol and will do whatever is necessary to ensure this does not happen again. I hope to regain the trust and respect of everyone who has believed in me throughout my career.”
The veteran scored nine points in 16 NHL games for Chicago during the fall.
