Denmark lost to the quarter-finals in the last second

Denmark was one second away from the Hockey World Cup quarter-finals.

Then the German Tanya Eisenschmid scored a goal.

Instead, the Danes are out of the A-VM.

Conditions were clear ahead of Tuesday’s crucial group stage match. Denmark needed to pick up at least one point against Germany to secure a place in the World Cup quarter-finals.

The host country also took the lead in the first half through Josephine Hoegh Persson, but Germany equalized minutes later.

Then the Danes regained the lead in the second half, and it was only at the end of the match that things started to get really exciting.

I decided with one second left

Laura Cluj sent it 2-2 just over four minutes into normal time. The match looked like it was going to extra time and thus secured Denmark a place in the quarter-finals.

However, the Germans had to go further, with one point meaning last place in Group B and thus relegation from A-WC.

With one second left in the match, a German roar of joy erupted when Tanya Eisenschmid scored to make it 3-2 in the match. The goal means the Germans keep their place in the A-VM.

And the matter added to the sadness of Denmark, whose players seemed frustrated by the late decision. The players fell on the ice in tears after the 3-2 goal. Now B-WC matches await next season for the Danes.

With tonight’s result, Hungary will face the United States in the quarter-finals, while Germany finished playing in the tournament.
