Djurgarden drops a million again after success in the Europa League

Thursday’s win brought another 5.5 million into the coffers.

Later in the evening, Djurgården was able to claim a promotion and another large sum of money after the success of ECL.

– Now a lot of money is pouring in, says sports director Bos Anderson.

Djurgorden has already won a large amount of prize money after reaching the group stage Europa Conference League.

Advancement to the group stage gave more than 30 million kroner, and since each win in the group gives €500,000, Djurgården managed to collect another 5.5 million kroner after Thursday’s win over Gent.

Two hours into the match, there was more rattling in the cupboards.

When Molde defeated Shamrock Rovers 2-0, it was clear that Djurgården would advance from Group F of the Europa League.

A million new rain on teams

Djurgarden lead the group with a three-point lead over Molde and if the Blue Ducks maintain their lead, they go straight to the round of 16.

A win for the group also means a deposit of 650 thousand euros into the account – that’s another 7.1 million kroner.

If Djurgården loses first place to Molde, it will instead be a Europa League Round of 16 match against a team that has left the Europa League.

The club then instead received €325,000 – 3.6 million kronor – for placement in the group.

Boss: “Very happy…”

– The sports aspect is the most important and the way for this money. You can probably sum up he’s been great so far in Europe, says Bossi Andersson, Director of Sports at Djurgården, and continues:

– And I think Henke (Henrik Berggren, CEO) and our economists are very happy … because a lot of money is pouring in now. Then we’ll see how to invest in it. We must not forget that this is a long-term project.

“You will not throw money”

In total, Djurgarden registered €4,606,000 – just under 51 million kroner – during this year’s European Games. Then the money for first or second place is not included in the pool.

For us players, the focus is mostly on the sporting side and the most important is progression from the group. That’s more money that benefits us in the long run and allows us to invest more in the team. But I know Henke and Boss are smart there, and even if we received more money, no one would throw it away, says centre-back Marcus Danielson.

Gustav Wickheim was almost lyrical about Djurgarden’s achievements in Europe.

It made it to the playoffs from Djurgården’s first group stage in Europe, with two matches left to play. How do you feel about it?

– It’s so cool! You are very proud of the team. We can do that, when we’ve played so many games, and still keep playing. This was a game where we did really well.
