Djurgården Hockey’s grim numbers – 7.8 million loss

Djurgården expects to lose five million during the season in hockey Allsvenskan.

It was closer to eight.

“With deficits in recent years, the economy has become weak,” the club wrote in its annual report.

Last spring, Djurgården’s men left the SHL after four straight defeats against Timra in the passive playoffs.

The team worked hard to make the same journey as the HV71 and head straight back to the Swedish ice hockey sweet room – but fell in the deciding Final Seven against Modo.

Hockey’s Djurgården had budgeted for a loss of five million crowns before the season.

But that number was closer to eight million, the club wrote in the annual report.

Strained economy

The club explains the numbers with the heavy investment in men, changes in organization and “a general cost increase in society”.

The elite license should not be in jeopardy and Djurgården wrote that it will be able to field competitive teams in both the SHL and SDHL next season, even if the economy is described as “poor”.

“Ahead of next season, the company’s public finances are strained and dependent on a zero budget in terms of results,” they wrote.

Borrowing from football

The club also wrote that it had taken out a loan from Djurgården Football to cover lower incomes during the summer. A loan to be repaid when the hockey season begins.

Djurgården hosts Björklöven at home in Hovet for the Allsvenskan hockey premiere on Friday 22nd September.
