Djurgården players suspected of rape after loss to Djurgården

Last Saturday, Djurgården lost 3-0 away to Djurgården.

Just hours later, a player is suspected of raping a woman in Stockholm.

It must have happened on Sunday night, sometime around one o’clock, says prosecutor Frieda Vidin.

The player arrived a few minutes late for today’s custody hearing at Stockholm District Court. He looked at the ground and was silent at the beginning of the session, but denied the rape allegations.

An hour later it was announced that he had been arrested on probable grounds of rape. Charges must be filed no later than October 20 at 11 am.

The player has already been suspended by Djurgården during the investigation and will now be detained for two weeks, which means he will miss at least the next five games: two conference league meetings with Gent, a derby match against AIK, and a league final against Häcken and senior. Flight match against Malmö.

Mainly oral evidence

The suspected rape must have occurred at 1 a.m. on Sunday, October 2. In this case, it was only two hours since Djurgaarden came home from an away match against Dijerfors, in which they lost 3-0.

– I cannot go into any details about the investigation, says Chamber Prosecutor Frida Vidin.

What evidence is there against the player?

– I can’t go into it. But it is mainly oral evidence, interviews with those involved and witnesses.

The club refuses to comment on the arrest.

“Djurgården Football is pursuing an investigation and currently has no further comments regarding the case. The player is still suspended.” They write on their website.
