Elisa Neuvonen had cancer under her eye – now she’s competing in EC

The sun was shining and Elisa Neuvonen finished 10th in Tuesday’s 35km EC race in Munich.

Finn smeared well with sunscreen.

– Sometimes even a doctor can be blind to his problems, Neuvonen tells Ilta-Sanomat.

Alisa Nieuvonen, 31, had a great summer.

The Finnish walker broke the national record (by 48 seconds) at 35 kilometers in the water course in Eugene in July and finished 10th over the same distance in the European Group on Tuesday.

The results came despite Neuvonen spending a lot of time in the hospital. True, Nieuvonen works part-time at the Kuopio University Hospital, but this year she was also forced to be a patient.

You have a cancerous tumor

Elisa Nieuvonen told about the little dot that had grown under her eyes for more than a year.

– It gradually grew. Sometimes even a doctor can be blind to his own problems. It was people close to me who noticed something, I didn’t think so myself, Nieuvonen tells Ilta Sanomat.

When the point under the eye was examined, it turned out that Neuvonen had suffered from basal cell carcinoma – a malignant tumor that can damage if it spreads.

Cautions: ‘biggest risk factor’

Elisa Neuvonen underwent treatment to remove the tumor and now wants to warn others about something she herself didn’t attach much importance to.

Ultraviolet radiation is the biggest risk factor for this and many other tumors, she says and then continues:

The first instruction is to avoid the hottest sun, from midday to late afternoon. If this is not possible, long clothes, hats and sun hats are useful. Sunglasses and sunscreen help, too.
