Martin was one of the most important players in HV71 history and meets the requirements that HV71 must raise his shirt at Husqvarna Garden, says Johan Lindbaum, Club Director of HV71 in a press release.
He won four golds in the Swedish championship
With 718 matches in the HV jersey, Martin placed fourth in the most matches played in HV71. His long career included four Sweden Championship golds with the club and a World Cup gold with Tre Kronor.
Martin has HV71 in his blood since childhood and stands out among all HV fans for what he has done for the club. Lindbaum continues: I can’t imagine a player more deserving of his retired number than Martin Thornberg.
“looks unreal”
Thörnberg played four games for the HV71 team in allsvenskan hockey last season. The dangerous striker is loaned from the hockey team Dalen, where he played his last two seasons after not receiving a renewed contract with HV71 – much to the disappointment of fans.
HV71 is now back in SHL and when Brynäs comes to visit on January 5, 2023, the number 10 will be retired forever.
– It’s so much fun, but it also feels a bit unrealistic. I have absolutely wonderful memories from my years at HV71. Not only gold, but all the people I met and my friends. This is something I am very grateful for. Even as a child, I dreamed of playing the HV71 and I’ve worn my HV with pride throughout my career, says Martin Thörnberg.
