Jacob Wedel Zetterström on success at Djurgården

Jacob Wedel Zetterstrom was successful during the spring and was perhaps the best goalkeeper in the Allsvenskan team.

But the 23-year-old does not dream of leaving Djurgården.

– I’ve noticed that it can be over quickly, so I really try to enjoy every exercise and not let my thoughts wander, says the 23-year-old.

After a double concussion, Jacob Fidel Zetterstrom was forced to take a break from football. But a year later, the goalkeeper returned in May last year when he made his Allsvenskan debut in a 0-0 match against IFK Gothenburg.

This season, Widell Zetterström has played all of Djurgården’s matches and is considered by many to be the best goalkeeper in the series.

It was so much fun to play and I feel like I’m improving with every passing day and every game I play. You get into the speed and the game much more. Being a goalkeeper is very much about routine and there is a difference between one match and 30 matches, he says.

Are you surprised that you became the first goalkeeper?

– We have a very good group of goalkeepers so obviously I am very happy to play and this is proof that things are going well. But it was clear that one probably did not dare to believe it a year and a half ago.

“More protection than others”

The involuntary withdrawal from football means that Widell Zetterström values his daily life more.

A little too much, sure. I’ve noticed that it can be over quickly, so I really try to enjoy every training session and every match and not let my thoughts wander and think too much about the national teams and other things. I feel very good where I am and I enjoy the day a lot.

Not thinking about the next step and play in Europe?

– No, I really don’t. You have to see what happens. I couldn’t have predicted that I would have two concussions and stop playing football and I couldn’t have predicted then that I would be standing here after a few years and have had 30 games, so it’s ridiculous to think too much. You’re dreaming, of course, but I don’t know if there’s much to dream about. I feel very good here and to be able to play in such a beautiful union is a very good thing.

Wedel Zetterstrom has nothing left of him but his concussion, but the helmet he’s playing with won’t let go.

– I only have it because I don’t want to have another concussion so I might be more protective than the others. It’s just silly to stop. The head must be taken care of. It is very difficult to ride on such bangs. It may not be pretty, but I will continue to wear it because it makes me feel safe.
