Joel Lundqvist from Frölunda leaves hockey

Now Joel Lundqvist makes the final announcement.

This would be his last season as an ice hockey player.

“There were a lot of thoughts and feelings to deal with, but I did catch on to the fact that this was going to be my last season,” he says.

Joel Lundqvist played 20 seasons with the first team in Frolanda, the last 14 seasons as captain.

After the 20th season and when he turns 41 on March 2, Elite’s career comes to an end.

– I still love to compete and play hockey, but since November last year I’ve been thinking about whether I should continue playing or not. I know what is required on and off the ice in my league and I feel ready. I want to be honest with the association, my teammates, the fans, and myself,” says Joel Lundqvist.

With four SM gold medals (2003, 2005, 2016, 2019) and four CHL titles (2016, 2017, 2019, 2020), he is a Frölunda legend and one of the club’s greatest ever players.

– I’m so excited for the rest of the season, the last and most important part. Winning is the obvious goal, and at the same time I want to enjoy representing Frölunda for all that entails. For me, says Joel Lundqvist, “it’s all about focusing on the here and now before it’s time to look toward a new chapter in life.”

Since making his elite league debut in the 2000/2001 season in what was then called Västra Frölunda, he now owns the club records for most appearances, most points, most goals, most assists and most minutes sent off.
