Jussi Olkinuora is Brynäs’ new brother

Big, safe and very loud.

Jussi Olkinuora shouts directions to players on the field with great authority:

– Sometimes I feel stupid when I hear myself on video. People don’t like their voices, Brenas’ new goalkeeper says with a grin.

After collapsing 1-7 against Oskarshamn, in which Jussi Olkinora replaced Anders Lindbäck at 0-3, Brenas conceded only four goals in the last three matches. It was also enough for two victories in the tough battle for a play-off spot.

A big reason for this is the Finnish Olympic and World Cup champion Jussi Oleknura.

The first three-pointer since January 28th came against Malmö, a game Brenas won 4-1, but it was a tight one.

Malmö tied it at 1-1 in the third period and then created a series of dangerous situations for a key goal. Then Olkinuora surged forward with some really sharp saves.

Not least when Marcus Laurelsen was there.

– A great push-up which he did then, and there was a great cheer in the booth and we said that was a sign that our night was on. It really gave us energy, says forward Jakob Blomqvist, there was probably a 1-2 there.

But it’s not just the sharp saves that set Jussi Olkinuora apart.

It’s not unusual for a soccer goalkeeper to loudly direct his defense, but in ice hockey it’s not uncommon – and above all it’s not usually heard in the stands.

It’s unusual for a goalkeeper to talk so much.

But when Olkinuora is conducting and giving advice to his players on the field, she can be heard all the way to the press stand at the top of the ERP Monitor Arena.

– I’ve been doing this for a long time, I feel stupid sometimes when you hear yourself on video. People don’t like the sound of it, Olkinora says, but I hope it’s useful and I just want to say things that help players.

Does it also help you stay focused?

– Yes, of course, but I can go on anyway, so that’s not why I’m doing it, but to help the team.

Jacob Blomqvist only positively sees Olkinuora loudly directing the defense:

– It’s not uncommon for a goalkeeper to talk a lot, but it’s a very big help for us. I don’t know if you’ve seen a goalkeeper talk so much. Some may talk but you rarely hear what they say behind the mask and so on.

The win meant that Brynäs and HV71, who also had three points, were still on the same score.

– It’s very tight and for me personally I want to give every minute and every game I play. Focusing all the time is what’s important, says Jossi Olkinora.
