On April 17, Kaspre Kapanen registered for military service at the Sports School in Sandhamn outside Helsinki. He was only there for an hour before leaving on representative assignment – namely the National Ice Hockey Team’s WC camp.
– I went there to register. That was the case, Kapanen tells Ilta-Sanomat.
Kapanen says that during his time on the national team, he received a letter from the Finnish Armed Forces. This is after they noticed that his beard had grown.
– I was told to shave my beard, says Kapanin.
“I saw something”
The St. Louis star also reveals that reinstatement Nicholas Matenbaluken, who began his military service in April, received the same message.
– When you get a message from there, you listen. They saw something. So the next day we were clean-shaven boys.
Kapanen says he originally only planned to start the position in July. But after it was moved from Pittsburgh to St. Louis, it became possible to start the service earlier.
In the fall, Kapanen will return to North America – however, military service will not be completely over.
– The plan is not completely finished, but it should be done within two years, he says.
