Kiruna mourns Porgy Salming

Hockey legend Porgy Salming has passed away at the age of 71.

And today Kiruna, his hometown, honors him with a minute of silence.

“We left a great hockey player and person,” says Alderman Gunnar Silberg.

Ice hockey legend Boreh Salming fought to the end. Boureh passed away Thursday after developing amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) this summer.

His condition deteriorated rapidly and sharply.

Start Salming was born and raised in Kiruna. At exactly 9:00 a.m. on Friday, his hometown honored him with a minute of silence.

“We feel great sadness, but we will always remember Boreh with love and warmth. Great pride and gratitude that he put Kiruna on the world map,” Kiruna municipality wrote in a press release.

The flag was flown at half-mast outside Kiruna City Hall. A minute’s silence was observed in memory of Porgy Salming.

– A wonderful hockey player and a person left us. It feels good in this sad moment to have time to name a street after him before he dies. “My thoughts go out to the Borgi family, their loved ones at this time,” municipal councilor Gunnar Silberg says in the press release.

Kiruna Municipal Council recently decided to rename Matojarvigatan to Börje Salmings gata.
