It was Monday in March to train Färjestad goalkeeper Maciej “Masken” Szwoch in the gym. The 37-year-old was doing an exercise he had done many times before – before suddenly falling to the ground.
– I don’t have many memories, but I know I was training. I did withdrawals. In the world of crossfit, there is a variable that makes you gain a great deal of speed. I remember I was going to change the grip and simply lost the grip, saying “the mask” and going on:
– But I put 20kg on the floor below to be able to climb and I don’t have such a long way to get to the pole, and that must have been the one I hit when I landed. I fell on the head first.

My next memory is waking up in the ambulance wondering why someone cut my shirt off. This is pretty much what I know happened. It was a real hit, and I’ve been told the rest, he says.
When did you realize that something serious had happened?
Fortunately, our team doctor was on call, so he met me in intensive care. He was able to tell us what happened, and made it clear that we should take this very seriously. It turns out pretty quickly that I didn’t stumble a bit. It was a real hit.

– I was mostly lying down and sleeping. I was in a little bit of pain of course, so I was resting and trying to let my mind recover. I have to say the care was great, but that’s not where I want to be. He says: I want to be with the boys.

Do you know what the near future will look like?
– I’ll stay here in the hospital longer. Fortunately we have a break for the national team soon, so I’ll be home. It is important that the brain rests as much as possible. When I’m ready, I’ll start working again, but my mind is in control of the process. It’s a severe concussion, so there are routines around it.
The 37-year-old continues:
Today (Friday reading) was the first day I had some energy, so I got some visits from kids, friends, and co-workers. Otherwise, I lie mostly and don’t do much. It’s very good that you are.
“I tried to watch the match, but it didn’t work.”
Last Thursday, Färjestad and Oskarshamn (2-3 after extra time) met at the Löfberg Arena. The match “The Mask” would have liked to see.
– I was going to try to watch the match, but it didn’t work. There was a lot of impression. I have to wait longer before I can watch TV, he says, adding:
I must be humble and listen to the advice of doctors.
What feedback have you received in recent days?
An incredible amount of care and love. I am very grateful for that. Then I also heard from people who were there when it happened, and I got a few more pieces of the puzzle. It wasn’t a pleasant experience for them either.
Most of the reactions were that I should get better. That’s a lot of texting. I didn’t have time to answer them all.
